1993 Team Marin

Just got my hands on a frame and fork in my size that I’ve wanted for almost 30yrs!

It’s very much going to be a slow burner due to cash flow but it’s very pretty so will sit on the wall for a while.. I say that but the 1990 pine mountain that was destined for artwork duties just a few months ago is now only needing a chain and jockey wheels :facepalm:

I had a little play with some autosol on one of the chainstays earlier and the nickel plating has come up ridiculously shiny! Hasn’t taken all the tiny rust spots off though, any tips??

fine steel wool on the rust to begin with mate

I have a 93 team issue - was covered in rust had to take all the laqcuer off and wire brush it

that nickel plate is hard stuff

looking forward to seeing the pics!

One of the best bikes Marin made. Fabulous tubing and geometry. Long tt for the time. Best finish going re aesthetics.

I and RTM have a lot of experience in restoring nickel-plated frames - GT85 and Spontex washing balls - stainless balls of swarf. Do NOT use wire wool. Wire wool just deposits loads of tiny bits of poor grade steel into the rust pits and it all starts rusting really quickly. Spontex is stainless steel, much harder and removes the rust, leaves the nickel, and the GT85 puts silicon in the rust pits, slowly the oxidation hugely.

There you go...cheap. Spontex and GT85.

Found some spontex under the sink, just had a quick blast and it came up nice, bit of autosol after and it’ll be gleaming! I’ll pick up some gt85 when I get some wheel bearing grease later.. Should I lacquer it afterwards? Or will autosol do the protection bit (says it does on the tube)?
