Retro Newbie
Hi, I have had my Kona Kilauea from new since 1993 and the time has come to sell it...a classic vintage Tange Prestige Concept steel hardtail - fully up and running.

There are no original parts due to a constant evolution of components over the years - but it is set up quite well.

Rough run down is
XT 8sp drivetrain with XTR titanium cassette
Hope front disc and rear XT V-Brakes
Hope front and rear Ti-Glide Hubs
Hope Ti BB
Middleburn RS3 Cranks w/
Middleburn 48 and Pace Chainrings
Rock Shox Judy TT (05)
Crank Bros Egg Beaters
Easton EA-70 Monkey Bars and EA-50 Stem

I am seriously considering giving the frame a respray in its original colours, cleaning everyting with a fine tooth comb and rebuilding so its as shiny as possible.

I have had quotes around £130 for the work, but how much is the frame worth and how much value would it put on the complete bike when i come to sell....Basically is it worth it!???

Or should i restore the frame and sell that separately?

Or just sell it now as is and let somone else do the work!? with all its "life scars"

Any good ideas out there for decals and spray craftsmen would be helpful.

All your thoughts are appreciated, anyone interested in the machine?

It has a lot of sentimental value for me, having taken me everywhere in the UK in the last 17 years - I want to set it up as nice as i can and give it to a good home. A classic machine, But is it worth it...

:D

With out a picture hard to tell if it needs a coat of paint. Why is it time to sell? If your happy and has sentimental value then keep. Gil_m or manitou916 are the decal experts on this site.

Didn't read the post properly.

I voted to reapray beacuse the Kiluea is a classic frame and one of the better Kona's.

However if you are planning on selling then don't, let someone get a bit more of a bargin and they can decide what colour etc.

Keep it and ride it, this is retrobike :-)

Or go through the proper channels of selling it...
Sounds like a dodgy 'offer me money' add on a first post ;)

In that case I offer...

It is never worth spending a lot of money on a bike in order to sell it.

It is also never worth selling a bike with that sort of kit as a complete bike. You would raise 50-100% more by selling the parts separately.

Or alternatively if you are tired of the frame and you are buying a new frame, you could transfer most of those parts onto the new frame.

Unless it has severe dents, dodgy-looking rust etc, it's unlikely that the frame would raise less than 60-70 as it is, so you have to consider whether it would be worth more than 200 freshly-painted, which is also unlikely.

If you're selling it, leave it to the buyer to decide what to do with it.

I will upload some pics soon once I have worked out how to do it!

I will indeed go thru the proper channels once I have decided what is best to do! Thanks to everyone here for their sage advice - its looking like a respray is not cost effective - tho I would love to see it looking as new before it goes. Perhaps I could be facebook friends with its new owner!
