Nice read and good job indeed. Can I just ask a potentially stupid question? If the chainstays were that bad, how can you tell the state of any of the main tubes or did you just get the frame builder to check them over? If there are no eyelets like say on the seattube, is there a way to tell that the downtube or toptube arent rusting from inside out?

i gave the frame a good shaking and the chainstays a tapping with a rubber mallet and the rust kept on dropping out. After some half an hour there was no more rust left loose in them or the rest of the frame. I'm pretty sure after that any other rust would have shown up and the frame was stripped back and completely resprayed anyway so any hidden/lurking rust would have shown its self.
My guess is that a previous owner did a lot of river crossings and favored the neglect style of maintenance and care.
