Well, this didn't quite go the way i thought it would, but let's start with the update. Papa Gil has made some real nice decals as i could provide him with scans from an original set (which i wasn't able to use, only lent from a friend).
Next stop was the painter who was already equipped with an original paint instruction from Joe Breeze as well as the paint numbers and the edit format for the scallops. When the frame arrived, the painter saw what i obviously should have seen but didn't, a massive "dent" in the steerer tube. Something unusual must have happened here.
Since i looked for this frame for more than two years, i decided very quickly, that this is not the end of the project. The sales price was low anyway, so a little more invest into the frame wouldn't do any major harm. More and more dents appeared (Lightning walls are very very thin), so the frame was sent to a specialist frame builder who does many frame repairs for the classic scene in Germany.
The initial plan was to replace the steerer tube only, but we have now agree to replace the top tube as well. Very exciting, but worth every penny....how often do you see a Lightning XTR?
wow those decals are amazing, did they cost much? I would be interested in getting some for my Lightning Pro (would need the XTR bit changing to Pro heh). For some reason mine only has that Lightning Pro sticker on one side of the top tube, were they all like this?
dent doesn't look too bad here but hard to see in the photo, it is steel so might be ok, perhaps push it out a bit as long as there are no stress cracks etc? edit: other tubes not so good...but sounds like your builder can fix
Love these bikes, good to see another one on the site.
Here's a couple of rubbish pictures of my freshly painted lightning... I definitely need to take some better ones but I'll wait until I have something to put on it...
