Apologies if this is covered somewhere else, but I tried a few searches and couldn't answer my questions:

1. Did the earliest Zaskars not have the 6061 stamp on the rear dropouts? I've seen a few 1991 (alledged) Zaskars and none of them seem to be stamped 6061.

2. What is the earliest Zaskar made? They started producing them in late 1990, ready for 1991, but does anyone know what the earliest month was?

Thanks.

1) I have a 1992 that does NOT have a 6061 stamp in it anywhere. I looked and looked and almost didn't buy it because it didn't have it, and I thought they all did. Some don't.

Also, the frame size stamp (19) on mine is on the outside of the same dropout (non-driveside) as the serial number, which is stamped on the inside of that dropout. I think that is unusual too.

2) I think I've heard of some 1290 serial numbers, but like you said, I think those bikes are considered '91s.

This is from mtb review, by gm1230126, who posts here, too:

If it's a Zaskar frame which it probably is....the serial number is stamped into the left rear dropout. The frame size shoud also be stamped there.
If it's an Avalanche, Pantera, Backwoods, Tempest or Aggressor it will be stamped in the bottom bracket.

The Zaskar's used die-cit decals on top of the aluminum frame all the other models had decals clearcoated.

I think I have one in my collection that is 0990. Would need to check to confirm. I forgot to add the question "when was the Zaskar developement started" when I questioned Bill Duehring for the 20 questions. I think they started working on aluminum in late 87. I think there's even someone in Germany that has an early development frame. Have seen both late and early frames without the 6061 stamp or a partial stamp. Better percentage o the serial numbers and most all of the frame size stampings were on the outside of the left dropout. Have seen/owned some 98 and 99 model year Zaskar's where the serial number is stamped into the bottom of the left dropout.

Thanks for the information. My 1991 Zaskar has the serial 11901830, so November 1990 and the 1830th made if I'm reading it correctly.

It's been painted blue, so I'm going to build a blue/black singlespeed, with the possibility of stripping it back to bare silver and black later.

I will start a build thread for it soon.
