1990ish Dream Machine

Right, firstly if you are a bike snob....click backwards and do one.
When I saw this 1990ish Carrera Krakatoa Gt advertised just 2 miles away from me I had no option other than to part with less than a round of ale to bring it home with me. I was even more chuffed to find it probably had less than 50 miles on the speedo (which still works) and a Zefal pump, lock and tool kit in the Allez bag!
I swapped the sofa of a saddle and off I went on a very jolly 10mile trip.
I have been made aware certain members on here arnt fans of these bikes but in absolute honesty I had a blast today!
If I were blindfolded (which would be stupid) I would say I was riding one one my many 1990/1 Saracens...weighty and sturdy....but desent

Bike snobs come in all shapes and sizes, and I have been accused of being one on many occasions.
If anything I'm an Inverted bike snob that really enjoys seeing bikes like yours, and I have spent a lot of time effort and dollar refurbishing a Carrera myself.

We have a duty to save bikes like this for the future, as this is where most of us started and this is the reason for most of us still being around and enjoying this nutty hobby. It's all part of our mountain bike history and should be celebrated.

I can appreciate a retro Carrera. I don't "dig" their modern "stuff" though (I probably will in another 20 years time however).

They all have a place in retro MTB for many I would say, I too would have snapped somebody's arm off for one of these BITD. I did end up with a bike from Halfords at the time but it was a 10 speed Falcon road bike

Great to see one in such nice shape as well - with neon frame bag

Lovely purchase and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. That pump and a shoulder bag were the must have accessories back in the day

I am a bit snobbish in the bikes I keep and ride but I'm a real sucker for bringing any bike back from the dead. Currently working on a late 80's Raleigh Mustang and I'm really enjoying it.

Awesome, my first MTB was one of those Krakatoas (or Cackatoa as it was later called!). I had exactly that neon shoulder bag too (must have been a Halfords accessory). That looks in great condition -- original cable outers too. I upgraded mine with a nice low'n'long stem and a Vetta Gel saddle (pretty much a sofa compared to a flight). And some Farmer John's Nephew tyres so I could get up hills. Although not around corners!

Sadly I snapped the rear chainstay on mine cycling back from lectures at uni (by then it had got relegated to hack bike). Obvdue to my power awesome, rather than a dodgy 'high tensile' steel frame. The bike then got nicked from the garage. Unfortunately I hadn't quite got around to taking the White Industries/Mavic M231/Panaracer Dart front wheel off it (quick swap from the good bike due to a puncture). Meant that I spent several months riding a Marin Pine Mountain with a front wheel that weighed about the same as the rest of the bike.
