199? Mongoose Amplifier

Wow. I use to have that very same bike in the same colors in the late 1990's, and put many a mile on it. This sure brings back memories.

Mine came with a Zoom Titanium stem and bars, and Shimano LX drivetrain, wheels, cranks and LX shifter/brake levers. The bike was sold at Reed's Sport Shop in San Jose, California, USA for US$2000 (frame only - $1200).

The left chainstay on my Mongoose broke near the dropout in '98, and, unable to find a replacement swingarm, I eventually tossed the frame in 2001. I sure regret that move now.

I ended up on a mid-90's hardtail Schwinn S95.2 frame, and am still riding it today (Go Retro!). Just about everything on it is from the mid to late 90's except for the new seat, tires and model-year-2000 Manitou fork (XT, XTR, Raceface, Kore, Salsa, Chris King).

I DO still have the wedge-clamp type Zoom titanium stem from the Mongoose though, made for a threaded 1-1/8 steerer tube, although the black rubber plug that went on top of the stem has been missing for years...

I think I still have the original 1-1/8 threaded AHEAD headset for it too, stored in a zip-lock baggy somewhere. I'll have to do some digging...

(P.S....your bike looks great!)

slight change up. wheels i was using got shifted to the Merlin, so using XT m737 hubs on Mavic 231 rear and 230 front along with Svelte (i believe) skewers. Silver Hyperlites with 5° bend instead of black 3°. Black CT stubby bare ends, and silver CT post in place.

I have a problem. I just can't get myself to leave me perfectly fine bikes alone. Well in this case, that may not be 100% true. I wanted a more upright riding position. So here's the next phase of changes.

I've had this replacement stem for a while but was missing the top cap. Having had no luck with sourcing an original CT plastic cap.

I opted to make use of a nice Chris King 1" stem cap that fit nicely into place. But I had no way of securing it in place. So I came up with my own "expanding" plug solution with some parts source from a few hardware stores. :D

I've also source two sets of CT bars, one in black and another recently in silver. Think I'll be going with the silver as I was happy with the look of the Hyperlite in silver already on it. I also swapped in a silver XT M737 headset.

A set of lovely ControlTech canti brakeset in black will be on it's way to me. But now my dilemma is I need to source a Amp fork brake cable hanger. Also need to replace the brake levers to something to compliment the CT canti brakes. Any recommendations? … I'm thinking perhaps Avid, Paul, Real, Altek or Box?

This one has been my unicorn for a many years.
Great looking bike. Just got one of those too in mint condition.
Will be dooing the same as you getting a full XT 737 groupset (just missing the crankset and rearhub with the 8spd cassete atm)

We should make a special Amp collection thread here :)

Hmm… how about a set of Mavic 217 sunsets??? :D Not sure I like the Spesh tyres that came with the wheelset. Perhaps back to the rustwall Mythos.

Also put on a canti hanger in anticipation of a brake swap. And got an Amp brace as spare. ;)

TWP brace or Amp brace… what do ppl think?
