1988 ‘dale sm600. 24/26

Little bit of progress on this.
Gave the Brooks this came with a couple of dabs of proofide top and bottom, then used a couple of cable ties to try and get the shape back:

Not sure if this will end up going back, I have another option which I had a go at re-covering this afternoon:

I’m getting better at saddle refurbs, should probably get some slightly thinner vinyl. What I’m using is off-cuts from a leather sofa which I took apart in order to get it to the tip in my car(!)..
Wheels both needed a hub service - both went well, very little wear on these luckily..

Oh, and I had to make a tool to get the freewheel off: 760520DD-A140-43E3-A32F-2B01068D5A4F.webp
I used an old 17mm socket, cut some notches in it and ground some flats for a spanner on the opposite end - the q/r keeps it in place while you unscrew it..
Lovely.. ;)

Little bit more progress made. Frame is at the powder coaters now getting a fresh coat of gloss black. Spoke to Gil @ retrodecals and he’s sorted me out for a new set of decals (legend), so they’re in the post too.
I won a nos correct stem for this on eBay and that arrived, it’s black but that’s ok for now. Not sure if I’ll paint it red or not, the saddle won’t be red so it might just look out of place. I’ll get the bike together and then decide.
The Brooks B17 that was on it got the 50 shades treatment..

Lol, a couple of good doses of Proofide and then leave it to get its shape back. I have since rubbed it down with 800 and polished it with boot polish. Had to do that as it looks like the previous owner rattle canned it along with the frame..
Next step was to clean off the old paint from the components and get them ready for paint:

I managed to get a single pair of dia compe 983’s off eBay too (top of pic) to replace the Deore II ones it came with.
Got all these bits in primer, hopefully top coat tomorrow:

I want to give the paint as long as possible to cure before I re-assemble the bike so the sooner they’re painted the better.
:)

Components are drying off nicely, two coats of paint and two coats of lacquer.

I went for Peugeot Graphite Grey, which seemed a close match on the can but it’s come out a bit dark. Ho hum, think it’ll be alright once it’s back together - heck of a lot better than it was.

26” tyre arrived, ordered one and received two (bonus!), just waiting on the 24” for the rear.

Stripped down with no major issues at all. Obviously it’s all going to need a thorough clean but also somewhere along the line I think a lot of it has been painted pretty badly.
Should keep me busy then..
The frame and fork will get powder coated in fresh gloss black. I need new decals but don’t think Gil does these and vintagecannondale.com only sells them in white.. hmmm.

Also a couple of non standard parts will need replacing so I’ll be scouring eBay for those (any excuse!).

Nice Mammod Rolls Royce....!

Love the Cannondale, total bargain.
