1987 Rossin RLX - Restoration Thread

Hello to all

Thought some of you guys might like to see this little beauty being saved from the abyss of mediocrity and rusting away until she was lost forever!

Acquired her a few weeks ago on Fleabay, as I thought I could see the solid structure of a fundamentally sound bike, and particularly frame, that was too good to let pass by, and could be brought back to being very decent indeed....

So, this is how she came to me - looking quite tired and pretty grubby with more than 30 years of grime and the chrome starting to corrode...

So... here she goes.

Fully stipped down. It will be a full nuts and bolts restoration. The gear levers were wrong. The brake levers were wrong. The grease had dried up years ago everywhere. However, now that she's been stripped down completely, all of the bearing surfaces were all completely sound and unpitted. Replacement brake & shift levers have been acquired and have arrrived. Just awaiting the brand new yellow SLR and SIS cabling to arrive from Germany - can you believe that you can't order this stuff from anyone in the UK anymore? Not even Chain Reaction where I used to get my cabling off-reel?

Sign of the times I guess...

Other than the areas of paint-loss, which are really, mainly, some tyre-rub and general chips to the seat-stays, the rest of the original Du Pont paintwork is in fairly nice order now that it has been T-cut and the sheen brought back to it. The main area was the bottom bracket shell, where moisture had got into the top of the rear of the shell and got in under the paint. This is has been rust-proofed and touched in. She's starting already to look like a real beaut!
