1973 Raleigh

I have what I assume is a 1973 Raleigh - it has Capella lugs but 3 head badge holes suggesting the Raleigh logo was there. It also has Raleigh decals but I don’t think they are original. I was reading somewhere that it’s likely to be a super course or a competition model. How would I tell the difference?

Can’t clearly make out the frame number unfortunately either to confirm it’s year.

You are right on your models. No idea how you would tell them apart other than from components.
Maybe the geometry was different?

a '73 Competition would have Huret forged ends and an Alatet headset,

a Harrington full-sloping crown

subject machine has Raleigh headset, stamped ends and Vagner crown

braze-ons and cantis inconsistent with both models

so any thoughts on what it could be?

Just checked the 1973 Raleigh catalogue and can’t find any model with braze ons similar to this.
If Raleigh only did Capella lugs in 1973 it suggests to me this bike is an earlier Carlton

Top tube cable routing like that the braze ons for the cables on the downtube near the head tube do not say 1973 to me.

Have you a pic of the frame number ?

am located in yankland so me familiarity of products heronic be pretty much limited to their yank editions

braze-ons, cantis & transfer set, as well as kitting, all indicate a date much later than '73

shall look forward to following along to learn the answer... ;)

As far as I’m aware Raleigh didn’t do capella lugs after 1973. Think it’s therefore earlier…
