1970? Carlton Ten

I bought this along with the 1955 F.R. Russell that's in another post. Its not been touched yet as you can see Seems to be a fairly rare model from around 1970, I've not found a huge amount of info on the net. Some of the components may reveal a better clue to the build date. Reynolds 531 frame and forks all in need of a serious scrub and polish but appears to be all original including the crap! One to bring back from the dead. Here's hoping the Carlton experts are around for a bit of input

I don't know much about Carlton seems only Raleigh was imported to the States but those lugs are quite pretty. What in the world got on those hubs it looks like axel grease for a commercial truck.

Strange mixture of parts, the 531 Capella lugged frame says on or before 67 or maybe a little later, ie using up old lug sets. The components like the 3-pin crankset say later. Its possibly been updated over the years. Great looking mount though and they do scrub up well. The flam copper paint is very nice. Large flange hubs are a nice touch too!

Hi,

if you click the Carlton link in my signature, you will go to my "Ten". Within that there is a link to the long discussion i had here to try and identify the bike, as it had been repainted. There are also links to other "Ten's" on the net.

Yours looks good for about '73, as mine is earlier, and has wrap over rear seat stays, and was not 531. The stem is right for that year, or there abouts. Yours also has a rear brake bridge, while mine was the old type support attached to the seat clamp bolt. The strange thing about yours, as Spokesman points out, is the lug work, which appears earlier, and throws the date into question.

Thanks for the comments I'll keep updating the post.

The plan is to completely strip and clean, new bearings, new grease! New chain, tyres, bar tape..... This bike and the 1955 F W Russell came from the same previous owner, I don't think he believed in ever cleaning a bike!

Thanks for the 73 brochure Spokesman its a useful guide as to how it 'should' look. Interesting point about the crankset as well.

Lovely old steed. That Brooks should come up like new with a good scrubbin' of Dubbin. Mine was in worse nick and looked great after a good polish
