1968 Caude Butler Corridore frame

Hello I thought that I should show you my new aquisition. it used to be my uncles sometime in the 1970's.

Frame number is 58268 which i am assuming means it was made in 1968. I'm told that you can work out the month from the frame number but not sure whether I'm reading that right.


It has seen better days and I want to respray as its rusting etc.

This is the first frame that I am attempting to build up from scratch so would be grateful to a few pointers.

Not knowing where to start apart from the good people on retro bike and e bay I am not sure where else should or could source the bits and pieces.
Any pointers would be great. I want to build it up with origninal bits if I can based on the claude butler catalogue that's online but we'll see if I can get that far. or whether many of the bits still exist.

The frame is reasonably rusty allover. Is there anything that i should be doing to it to stop it deteriorating further?

Lots of questions I know but I'm sort of floundering around not sure where to start.

Ahhh smashing. Give it a damn good going over with mild cutting compound - I use T-cut, but there's probably better stuff - then polish with hard shell car wax - you'll be amazed at how good it looks. Get yourself to some bike jumbles - you'll be able to pick up a lotof what you need for very fair prices. I'm collecting the bits for a CB Super Coureur and my Campag derailleur, GB stem and Maes bars came in at £25...

I'll give that a try first before I think about the respray.

Shaun- The Ernie Clements is my current pride and joy. Rides like a dream.Fortunately I didn't have to do much to that unlike the claude.

Here's the thread documenting my own slightly unhealthy love of 1960's Clauds - I'd guess the orange Electron is in similar condition to your Corridore. I was really chuffed to find that the rust really did polish off,leaving dark grey metal underneath. I love the way it looks now, scratches and all...

looks like i need some elbow grease and t cut. Do you know what the funny lump of steel on the right side of the fork is for? Never seen that before but notice that yours have one to.

You are referring to the lamp bracket boss, 5/16 x 26 tpi, usual on general purpose bikes from the 50's to 60's. If you are repainting you can warm it up to melt the brazing, and lop it off.
Plenty of history out there, you have a frame made by The Holdsworthy Company, badged Claud Butler, they also badged Holdsworth and Freddie Grubb. They made quite decent bikes and fair value at the time.
