1964 Flying Scot - advice needed

nelly

MacRetro Rider
So I am hoping to participate in the Bravo Scozia Ride later in the year - and I have this old Flying Scot hanging in the shed. Many years ago when I acquired it I built it up as SS city run around, but I soon moved onto other projects and the Scot has been neglected.

However I am now feeling inspired to show the Scot some love, but I am lacking both inspiration and the knowledge of how to select parts for this project. Originally I had thought about a new paint job and rebuilding it with classy parts, but I have kind of fallen out of love with bikes that bit too fancy - or too precious. (and too expensive!)

So after watching this wee non bike related film http://tudorwatch.hodinkee.com/tudor/20 ... ame-fowler I decided to forget about a fancy paint job and set about rebuilding it as is with practical retro parts for the forthcoming Bravo Scozia event.

The bike is equipped with a stem, but the riser bars have been chopped for city riding and the SS rear wheel will need replacing. I have thought about a 27" wheel set as 700's I am running just now require extremely long drop callipers - and there is very little choice. I have a pretty classy TA crank set on my Dawes that I could use, indeed I could just pillage the wheel set, derailleurs and down shifters from the Galaxy - but I am open to ideas about how I could rebuild this lovely old bike - over to you retrobikers, comments please!

Hey,

Got any photos?

Bravo Scozia looks like it will be loads of fun and this should be the perfect bike.

If your Galaxy has touring gears and a long cage derailleur the gearing could be handy for this ride. Either a triple crankset or a larger than normal lowest rear sprocket would be handy. I have a
32 as the largest sprocket on the bike I ride on unpaved trails and it
comes in very handy.

Bar end shifters might be a better bet than downtube ones.

Also consider cyclocross tyres if your frame's clearances will allow it.
Continental make a decent basic cyclocross tyre.

Good luck,

Johnny

Thanks for the input Johnny. I will probably not be putting drops on the Scot, I was thinking of come kind of swept back porteur or north rad style bars - so bar end shifters are out - I am upgrading the Galaxy - replacing the double TA crankset and down tube shifters, so these are parts I will have anyway. Good tip on the tires, thanks!

I will post photos shortly - couldn't seem to get it to work yesterday, doh!

So I stripped the bike down today and am contemplating whether I should retain the existing paintwork - or bite the bullet and get a decent paint job. Bob Jackson are quoting a £100, Argos are £140 - thats for one colour, and I had always thought I fancied a nice metallic bottle / 7-Up green. I have already had repop decals made, so they are standing by, should I need them. But the blue paintwork / patina is so nice….the question is, does the frame demand a paint job or can I stabilise the existing damage?
