120mm spacing?

Hi folks,

Seen a frameset, I'm guessing sometime in the '80s, that has 120mm spacing at the rear. Would this limit me to a 7-speed maximum, as it is? I know I could get it adjusted at a frameshop. Would like to use 8 but I think that may be too much, so a 7-speed cassette looks favourite, if I can get it in.

Your thoughts appreciated, thanks,

Mike

Re:

I always understood five-speed block or Sun-Tour 'compact' 6 to be the most you could get to slide unforced into a 120mm rear end. i.e. the usual '6', Regina, Maillard etc. would not go. (Not that I ever tried.)

There were still 120mm rear ends around in the '70s, and 'split the difference' 123mm for those uncommitted to '5' or '6' exclusively.

Hi Mike

Just had a look at the pics, 12cm according to his tape measure. Under BB guides and what looks like Allen bolt brakes puts it into 126-130 territory usually.

Re:

Just confirmed at 120mm spacing

I'm out then  Maybe not a bad thing!

Re:

Yes, track frames are generally 120mm although were 110mm for a while. They're pretty obvious though - no mevh hanger, rear-facing fork ends and fag-paper clearances. Often the seatstay bridge isn't drilled for a brake.
