10mm axles - all the same?

Been servicing the wheels on an old Archie Wilkinson I picked up recently. Rear single speed axle (10mm diam) cones were starting to pit so trotted off to LBS who sold me a whole 10mm x 175mm axle. Swapped over the cones and reused everything else but the cones look to be a different shape at the bearing surface

I expect all rear hubs to run 1/4" bearings but wonder if different hubs have different bearing circle diameters or if they are pretty much "universal"

FWIW these wheels have large flange Quando hubs and Weinmann 3200 26 x 1 3/8" aero rims, no idea of vintage but Archie Wilkinson still sells them on their website

Re:

If the ball size and number is the same then they are pretty much universal.
Spacing and sealing are the main problems you get.

Many of the aftermarket cones do differ, specifically in their angle of bearing face. Shimano ones always seem to be ground deeper and have more of a curve to them.
There was a long and technical discussion about this in the CTC forum recently.

thanks folks, seems to have built up fine with new cones and balls - though one side of the hub only wanted 8 balls and the other 9 . . .

Its a single speed hub, the 8 ball side was the fixed sprocket side and 9 ball was freewheel side - assume that's right?

I also assume the cones we not handed? Didnt take any notice of which side of the axle they came from (it was a 175mm dérailleur style one)
