10 years away, first ride today

I started riding after a 10 yr break when I joined this site (reason for registering was looking for new elastomers for my pace forks on my old Marin.

I dont think Ive got any fitter but I do have a few more bikes now, and also am carrying less weight.... sadly the weightloss has all come from around the wallet :(

Totally the same with me!!

10 years for me and my first ride was well funny.... Puffing and panting couldnt even pedal the large chain ring and thinking ...Christ I dont remember it being like this!!

But kept at it and the local circuit I was doing with 10 stops at first the last time I did it I didnt even feel like my legs were even stretched but seem to of hit another wall now of not getting any fitter from the level I am now :?

It is a great feeling though getting back out there!! 8)

Some funny comments here, thanks all for your encoragement. Will keep at it, started commuting this morning, half hour each way every day, then a ride out in the lanes in the evening. I can see this could become seriously addictive again :D

From my own experience, I think you need to ride a couple of times a week [about 10-30 miles each time] to keep 'in the zone'

It's a great feeling though when you do eventually get fit and then trounce some younger riders up every hill.

I met up with some young riders a few weeks back.... they even expressed concern for the fitness of my Dyna-Tech - one lad said "do you think you will manage ok on that old bike? It's got no suspension or disc brakes" They all got quite a shock when me and the bikes combined 61 years were wating for them at the top of every hill :D

Ride and smile,

Chaser.

went on my first Retro Bike organised ride.... Felt really guilty that everyone had to keep waiting for me.

Been there, done that, still apologising

Tip for anyone as unfit as I was.....buy a Turbo Trainer....do 30-45mins every other day...then a couple of 'real' rides.....you'll be surprised.....just ask the guys I ride with every week

Determined not to be the overeight, out of breath dude at the back for much longer

When i returned to riding i found using a treadmill for 30 mins everyday to help build up good cardio IE "feck me i can breathe" so i did that for about a month and borrowed a set of dumbbells to build some upper body strength whilst going out for gentle local rides. After about 5 or 6 weeks of this my riding improved immensely and i am enjoying it more. Added benefit was i shed 3 stone doing this without the need for starving myself. I still drink beer like its going out of fashion and munch crisps and takeaway curries but i know when i do this i have to go work it off the next day.
