Next project I want to run 1 x 9/8
Can I bang on a road close ratio cassette and short cage mech....are the shifters for both mtb and road comapatible?

Rear shifters are the same, but road fronts use a different cable pull. However, you can mod an MTB front mech by running the cable to the other(wrong side) of the clamp bolt.
