1 X 9 ? setup has anyone tried this

Generally you will, but if your trails are smooth and you use a singlespeed chainring you might get away with it.

I'm running 1x9 and did have to buy a ring protector thingy to replace the large ring, it kept dumping the chain off to the right :). Got a silver one from CRC in the sale.

I've ran 1x8 for many years, mostly you just need 3 or 4 of them, but they're nice to have
I used a road set of cranks with the 52 outer and 42 inner.I ground all the teeth off the outer and ran it on the inner, the ground off outer makes a neat trouser/chain guard.Use an anodised outer for a bit of bling[and its a good retirement home for these old rings]

Just three weeks into riding a 1x9, and love it. Attracted by the simplicity of ss but too old and knees too shot to do without gears, so have started by providing the range that gets most use on the triple ring bikes, running 11-32 with a 30t inner. I've had no problems with the chain shifting off , and the alignment of the front ring with the 5th cog provides really sweet changes. The chain bouncing off has been another matter and like dyna-ti I'm using a filed down outer (thank you Mrs Unocogero) as a bash-ring with a cut down front mech completing the chain retention duties.
The whole project has been as low a budget effort as possible with the intention of taking a bit of pressure off the Kona and Pace which have been getting well used all year round. Infact the whole thing started 'cos I mistakenly bought a 9 speed cassette off ebay when thinking I was buying an 8 speed as a spare for the Pace.... and then I spotted a 9 speed shifter...and then a frame ... and
So this is a definite mongrel in the best sense of the word wonderfully suited to the local riding, friendly and fun. :D
