Claud Butler 531 tubed road bike spotted in Leicester

I don't know if this is worth a thread or not. But, I spotted a Claud Butler 531 tubed (no markings on the forks) road touring type bike at Cash Converters in Leicester for £70. The seat looked as if it had lost its cover, being foam only. It had mud-guards. Looked to be in the sort of condition...

What is this Viking that I have bought

Thanks for the link. I'm a bit confused though. The link says that nothing much has been heard of the marque since it moved to Ireland. But, the name is still in common usage. I have a modern Viking single speed. (It just happened that way, I didn't plan to own two Vikings).

What is this Viking that I have bought

Thanks. I've had two separate pieces of advice not to change the gears. But, I've had other advice to keep my cadence at 90rpm up hills. I'll need legs of iron to manage that on steep hills with my current gears, but maybe that's what I need. It's tricky to find decent hills around here so I can...

What is this Viking that I have bought

Re: Thanks Yardbent. When I return home I'm going to have to do some more counting and measuring before I can fill in the form. However, I find that page encouraging. One reason I bought a cheaper bike because I thought I didn't have the knowledge to go out and get the 'right' bike for me. If...

What is this Viking that I have bought

Re: Whoops! I see I haven't posted the requested photos yet. I'll try to get these photos. I've used the bike in a triathlon now. It was a learning experience. I was quite a bit slower than my single speed in a previous triathlon, but it was a different course and also very different weather...

Skinny tyres for 27 1/4 rims?

I've thought about the tyres, and think that the best strategy is to wait until my current tyres wear out, then look at my best option for an upgrade. I don't think it's worth replacing the rims until my current rims wear out. This is not meant to be my last ever bike, but something that I can...

What is this Viking that I have bought

Thanks for the information. I've thought about the tyres, and have decided to leave them as they are until they wear out. Then, I'll be looking at my best options. I've put SPD-SL pedals on the bike, and hope to buy compatible shoes this evening. Tomorrow I'm picking up some aero bars. After...

What is this Viking that I have bought

Re: Thank you very much for the advice. Including your post, I've had Kool Stop and Aztec brake blocks recommended. The bike has had a service today, as a cycle charity had a drop in repair shop, and I took it along. The brakes were adjusted, and they do work better. Not wonderfully well...

Skinny tyres for 27 1/4 rims?

Thanks. They're a bit thinner, but not with a chiseled profile like some tyres that I've seen on modern bikes. Given that difference, I'd be inclined to use the WTs until they wear out then reconsider my options.

What is this Viking that I have bought

As asked, I attach a photo here. My question is about the brakes. What brake blocks will I be able to use with these brakes. I presume these generic blocks would do: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Pairs-of-Cy ... 51b0e3e294 But, I'd be prepared to spend a bit more to get better stopping power...

Skinny tyres for 27 1/4 rims?

Re: Thanks. My bike has Michelin World Tour tyres at the moment, which appear to be in good nick. But, they are really thick, they look a bit like hybrid tyres. I'll keep a look out for the Panaracer Paselas. Depending on how much skinnier they (or other recommendations people might make) are...

Skinny tyres for 27 1/4 rims?

What are the skinniest least road resistance tyres that I can put on 27 x 1 1/4 rims?

Are there knock off peanut butter spanners?

I bought a 15mm spanner (specifically for bike wheel nuts) on ebay for £1 something including postage. When it arrived, I was really impressed by how well made it is. On the other hand, the cut-out 'spanner' that was in a puncture repair kit I bought at a pound shop in an emergency when I...

What is this Viking that I have bought

The Wolverhampton ones stopped around 67, I believe from googling around a bit. http://classicvikingcycles.com/ Another site suggests that Roy Clements (the NI owner I presume) acquired the name around 1977, which predates this 1979 model. I bought this bike to use it for a specific purpose. I...

What is this Viking that I have bought

Unfortunately it's dark, and the only camera we have with a decent flash is currently recharging. Photos tomorrow. The head badge isn't one of the older ones (bike looks to be 80s or early 90s) easily found on websites. There is a Viking ship, with a big red sail saying Viking, but no...

What is this Viking that I have bought

I've bought myself a Viking ten speed bike. It has 531 stickers on the frame and the forks, but the person who sold it to me says that he thinks it isn't actually a 531 frame. There is no model name that I can see, apart from a sticker saying "J. E. James" on it. I presume that refers to...

Wanted: Classic Road Racer style bike in or near Leicester

Re: Wanted: Classic Road Racer style bike in or near Leicest Thanks WP and Chute. I'm keeping my eyes out, and I can see many bargains. But, I don't seem to see the bargain in the right place at the right time with the right frame size. I think I'm going quiet again. My brother is a very...

Wanted: Classic Road Racer style bike in or near Leicester

Looking for 22-23" frame. Would like to try it out first. The other day I met a cyclist who was riding a 531 framed and forked Claud Butler road racing bike which was impressively light even though it had mudguards and carrier. He had paid £150 for it, and if I found something similar I'd buy...

A number of mostly Raleigh-ish bikes on Gumtree Leicester

All posted on gumtree this morning. The two that would fit me frame-size-wise are the 'Vintage Raleigh' and the cheaper of the two Sun Solos, which are beyond me in terms of their membership values in the fuzzy set 'project'. http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/531-r ... 1023793056...
