Radially spoked front wheels was a thing in the later 90s, pinched from roadies. It looked good and saved weight but gave quite a solid and harsh ride. That’s why you don’t see that on more up to date bikes. Deffo go for the Z-21s, the black Deore LX hubs would have been off the next model...

More of a change than an upgrade. The Z-21 rims on XT were a light combo (even came with alloy nipples) but not too strong, it’s possible the rims on yours became pringles and were just changed. An “upgrade” would have been something like Mavic 217 when they came out.

So, it turned out that the crack was terminal, wall art basically. After quite a bit of searching I tracked down a replacement frame with zero cracks and better paintwork than my original. I spent the next few months gathering all the parts to build it up as close to catalogue as I could:

I need to get some new pics, but this is my Cadex CFM3 as it was a couple of years ago. Basically a replica of the one I raced back in 93.

Maybe you’ve done it already, but if not, please can you swap your pad carriers so that they are the correct (safe) way around…just a bit of ocd.

All that really matters is that you’re happy with it. It’ll certainly make a great pub bike 👍

There is no preloading as the bearings are press fit and the forks then go in, you just need to get new bearings. You can also get a dust seal to go between the stem and the top bearing, although, from memory, I don’t think the early ones came with one…No harm in adding one though.

Nice find. I always liked Saracen from that era, great value for money compared to other brands.

Cannondale mainly, but there were others back in the early 90s.

It’s original, looks ok from a few feet away, but close up….not so good.

Acorn gets my vote, they did a stem for me and it came out spot on.

To be honest, I’ve replaced mine with a period correct Controltech stem, but I’m considering getting the original stem blasted and then put a clear coat on it, better still, I even have the little rubber grommet that covers the bolt hole.

Agreed, I’ve done a little more digging, certainly 2000/2001.
