Build log, ramblings, cutting down a collection

November update : 1 new frameset in the workshop currently, 1 new bike arrived ( Marin Sausalito 1995) , 2 framesets in the paintshop, 1 vintage bike on order from ebay. workshop is looking quite 'blue' currently - must be the diabolical weather!

love the little paw print on this nice bike

I am reasonably confident the courier I restored was 1987 and that had the yellow frame decals on it not like this one so 1986 is a good guess without an actual frame no. To go by

Flat but grippy (to the ground) shoes recommendation.

although I too am a fan of FiveTen , Leatt and similar, I get it about grippy soles - have you looked at some of the general purpose street/ climbing 'approach' shoes - like Rafiki Monte approach - they have super grippy sole, durable and the rubber bits will stick to the pedals like...

love the little paw print on this nice bike

'mass produced' probably earliest high volume MTBs were 1980 Merida and Murray Baja -no? I'd buy that today :-)

everyone's worst nightmare - coming to Manchester

I think they are more likely to end up in Wythenshawe - but will be used to terrorize Hale, Bowdon, Altrincham area - as we already have a large amount doing deliveries early evening - I am frightened of driving into them in the dark as they appear from nowhere and proceed up the...

2nd Merlin Prestige 1996 Build Thread

PM sent wrt frame no. Fwiw I contacted Merlin last week to see if they kept any decals, but they sold out years ago apparently. I guess we could collectively commission some remakes from Gil or similar, but for the moment I am thinking of keeping this one as-is without repainting. Cheers, P

    653 Dawes Synthesis

anything steel, 700c with canti stops and good tyre clearance gets my vote ! Slender retro tubing with gravel or CX tyres looks infinitely better than ghastly carbon nonsense and grotesque oversize alu imho. its deifnitely true that current generation also wont go for skinny tyres...

    Ti Donohue mini 'build' thread

@Woz , yes that is pretty similar, I must say I thought it was more for aesthetics than aero and maybe also a tiny bit of weight saving - since there is no need for conventional binder bolt or ugly seatpost clamp. It does allow you to see how thin the ti seat tube is against the...

    Ti Donohue mini 'build' thread

Mike on this forum (https://www.retrobike.co.uk/members/beenatitforyears.18277/) knows the full history of this frameset and is still in contact with Paul Donohue and confirmed it is his work and one of only half a dozen made with this Reynolds 2000 tubeset. I can confirm the seatpost bolt is...

Bike of The Month November 2025 "Amnesty Special" - now taking entries

...reviving an entry from March 2025: PWebb's 1992 Diamond Back Axis original build thread https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/2025-time-warp-build-thread.488809/ not an exotic Canadian wizard's iconic creation perhaps, but one of the nicest paint finishes DB ever produced IMHO

2nd Merlin Prestige 1996 Build Thread

fitted a new Tange threaded headset and specsheet* correct UN52 BB *I will go for the 'Expert'/'Pro' spec from back in the day ( mostly XT ) but minus the V brakes as I much prefer cantis. I think I have most of what I need for a period correct build - to be continued...

2nd Merlin Prestige 1996 Build Thread

Having previously renovated a 1997 Prestige (https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/merlin-prestige-1997-project-thread.488324/) I couldn't resist this one from RB member @DalryBikeDepot ... frame number confirms 1996 build but apart from decals this is ostensibly the same frameset...

    Argos MTB in Yeovil

owner posts occasionally on Retro Mountain Bikes UK group - seems to collect Saracens and is therefore also likely to be a member here. price reflects pedigree of the frame IMHO - TIG welded Cr Mo so £100 seems about right to me, cable routing says late 80s to me (bottom pull mechs)...

    Work bikes

My most ridden bike: goes down to the allotments, takes me to and from my workshop in Altrincham almost daily - has no fancy components 100% parts-bin build, plus this 1997 frameset cost me £80 on ebay from a very nice Gentleman in London - I took bubble wrap and packing tape...
