SUCCESS! Caustic Soda to remove seat-post-my experience

I've used Fluid Film on a couple of bikes - I think it's lanolin based. I use it after I've painted the frame. It came top in a rust prevention shoot out: https://www.mtbr.com/threads/anti-corrosion-product-shootout.1073581/

    Holdsworth Cyclone 1950

It will be interesting to see what it sells for. I've got a 61 Cyclone: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/1961-holdsworth-cyclone.471978/ But I'm not selling it anytime soon, just wondering what value for insurance (if I had any).

    Wow! Vintage pedals 😵

    I'm a big fan of Lyotard M23 - 1940s to 1980s https://velobase.com/Pages/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=31CA38D4-B05E-4050-8B43-8E4BEF89AD9A&Enum=109&AbsPos=28

    Road bike brake lever position

I'm going to say the drop on those bars could well be the issue. I use GB Tourmalet which have exactly the same dimensions as the stock bars on a 1982 Holdsworth Avanti. The other consideration is brake levers. I recently tried some 60s Mafac levers and had to ditch them and go back to Weinmann...

    1953 Holdsworth Whirlwind

Now on to the third build. It turns out I really don't like a heavy shifter action, and Cyclo Benelux Mark 8 Tourist + 50s Simplex shifter is really quite heavy. My 1961 Cyclone has SunTour Cyclone Mk2 GT + SunTour Power Shifters so I'm a bit spoilt. A shame to lose the period mech but I do...

    RH Stick shift front derailleur.

No bottles, no mudguards, 30mm tubulars and the open road. The Cyclo spec says that FD will handle 20 tooth difference, but you have to position it vertically quite carefully to avoid the chain hitting the vertical cage limits. Bought a work stand to set it properly for 18 tooth difference and...

    RH Stick shift front derailleur.

The Cyclo Benelux Mark 7 version has a longer handle and it's clamp on: https://velobase.com/Pages/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=F110D86B-28E3-4B23-AD34-02A16A064617&Enum=113&AbsPos=5 Don't know what it weighs but it works really quite well. Shifting 50/32 on my 1953 Whirlwind

    Replacing chain

A second vote for KMC, I find the quick link works really well. KMC 6-8 speed - width 7.3mm 114 links https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004TGL2K8?th=1 Used on all my bikes: 1953 - 1982, 6 speed to 8 speed. One of my bikes needs 116 so I just added 2 links from another identical chain - chain...

Cyclo dropout for Benelux - info/advice please

I tried a Mark 8 Tourist 5 speed on my 1953 Holdsworth. I've got SunTour New Winner ultra 6 13 - ??? freewheel on it so I could try 5 or 6 speed and 28 or 32 big cog. It would just handle 6 cogs but was only just managing and wasn't happy. With 5 cogs it shifted fine (13-15-17-20-28-18 "Ultra...

    Feature Films Featuring Bicycles!

Almost a film: The Fringe series 4 episode12: Welcome to Westfield First shown Feb 10th 2012, now free on ITVX. I've been rewatching Fringe while eating lunch and remembered the bike shop before it came on. Bike shop on Cyprus and Quimby, looks like the sort of shop I would like. I remember the...

Bikes and... wait for it, wait for it, Churches!

It was 30C outside so I did a short wander round the local Putney churches. Turns out there are quite a lot: 4.02 miles = 5 churches. I didn't get hit by lightning once. St John the Evangelist Polish church Our Lady of Pity and St Simon a bit boring - no spire. St Margaret's Much better...

    Holdsworth Mistral - Wheel size?

I'm running 700c tubulars + GB Coureur 66 on a 1961 Cyclone. Mafac Racer also works, but I use the 'long' version on the back, So very much 27" not required.

A terrible photo but quite difficult without getting run over. St Mary's Church, Putney Site of the Putney Debates on the English constitution in 1647: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putney_Debates On the upside I've got 13-32+50/32 working on my Whirlwind, and it's damn fine :)

    Hurlow(?) Condor - Norfolk

Those look like standard Nervex Pro lugs to me: https://classicrendezvous.com/country-of-origin/france/nervex-lugs/ Bill Hurlow may possibly have touched it, but he was known for doing his own lugs so I'm not sure that counts.

1960's Bluemels AFA pump seals wanted..

I've had a 1980s plastic Bluemels 3 for years, but recently got a BritanniAlloy Grand Prix for my 1953 Holdsworth. Uses leather cup washers which were well knackered. (I removed the multicolour rings with a hot air gun) Popped in to Belton and Slade - Wandsworth high street...

Nice Holdsworth in London needs rescue

Looks like a Cyclone to me, with fishtail lugs so 1959 - 1963, top of the range at the time. HT looks quite long so largeish. Definitely worth restoring, very nice bikes. My 22" 1961 after a lot of restoration:

Replacing an old freewheel. What's the usual way to go about it?

Just going to mention you can probably fit a 6 speed freewheel (ultra 6) in there, but may require some wheel adjustment. If you don't do mechanics yourself then don't bother. Otherwise check out SunTour New Winner Ultra-6 freewheels on Ebay, you can take them apart and knit your own gear...
