I think that he made far too many and continued selling them extremely slowly for a very long time. You could review old mtb mags from different years and look at actual people's bikes to see when they were not used as much.

I think that sometime around 1990, I was becoming more comfortable riding down steep hills without lowering the seat, so, around this time, I stopped using hite rites and on some bike stopped putting on quick releases. To me, a hite rite belongs on an earlier bike than the Whiskeytown.
