Today's Ride

Quit your moaning bike-weiners... we went to play tennis this morning at 11.30am.. (que Noel Coward) it was so flipping hot my brain wouldn't function properly.. first set got to (i think) 5-5 i was so hot and confused, i couldn't even keep the score, we only played for an hour and had to keep sitting in the shade between games.. yet this afternoon i've been for a 4hr bike ride in the peaks and felt just fine..

The peaks are regarded as beautiful to everyone I've spoken to, but point taken about real mountains

If you come from somewhere without BIG mountains the first you see is mind blowing. For me it was anyway and that was Mont Blanc as a 15yo. The Swiss Alps are stunning as is Mount Cook down in NZ. Will always remember opening the back door of the camper and Mount Cook was just there right in front of me. We had parked in the dark so didn't know what we might see in the morning. Magical.

Northern Italy for me, skiing trip with the school. I was sh*t.

Did my 40km loop for the first time in two weeks, with a nasty dose of sinusitis in between which was a big disincentive to exercise. Lovely sunny day but with that cold underlying breeze making the weather feel colder than it looks.

And two weeks off seem to have set back the old fitness a bit: there was no reserve of power, no extra gear to defeat the climbs. The missus had kindly provided a bidon of coconut water (she tells me sports drinks will make me diabetic), but when I took a big swig halfway round, it had gone off. That was not a taste sensation, but it also meant no rehydration until I got home.

Still, getting out into the world was well worth it and contributed considerably to raised spirits -- after a hot shower and a good few cups of tea to rehydrate properly.

That took 1 hour 50 min; about 1,460 feet climbing.

Yapped on enough about trying to do the climb at Crawleyside, had a couple planned days for it during the week. Bottled it on Wednesday and barely managed 14 miles so made Thursday a bit of a rest day. Planned a Friday early start, woke up and wasn't into it so did a slow Z2 ride out yesterday. 4:30AM alarm today, out by 5 and smashed it. For context about 34 there, 4 up it and 32 back.

First stop off, piss break about 3 miles off Crawleyside. Words cannot explain the amount of anxiety watching the miles ticking down near it.

Shortly after getting up it, not the official finish but at that point was a done deal. Steep, challenging but nowhere near as bad as I thought.

Looking out over the Pennines. I thought this was the official finishing point, turns out I'd missed a right turn however I ended up taking another wrong turn and doing a mile and a half extra past the finish point. Does that count? who knows, 18:44 on the segments I did qualify for.

Tackled Peth Bank after too since it was the most direct way home that didn't involve a horrendously surfaced A road. Cracking morning, ******* love bikes.
