Today's Ride

Huf! .. it was a shite ride for me today, it started off well with a slice of leftover cherry pie and custard.

Rode up through the Porter Valley, the cows came down to the river for a drink..

It was windy as hell today in the Peaks, not many folks out so i was f'kin nailing it.. approaching a loose rocky section in the center of the trail, i tried to ride up the bermed edges towards the outside of the trail to avoid the rocks but my tyre lost traction and slid down the berm which threw me off the bike.. Ouch!

I've scrapped my frame, my rear derailleur, my knee.. somehow my phone in my pocket managed to survive..

The worse was yet to come when i realised i had a front tyre puncture.. i always register the tyre branding centrally to the valve but the impact and loss of air was such that it's dragged the tyre around the rim.. ut-oh.. this doesn't look good. 😁

..a friendly caterpillar came over to lend a hand.. well more of a sucker really
fullsizeoutput_4909.webp

.. the innertube was toast with a series of 6mm slits in a line? i didn't have enough patches so i had to push home from Fox House.. back up through Burbage.. then the section from Burbage all the way to Ringinglow village without any footpath was just f'kin hideous.. culvert on one side.. walking for miles through waist high mother-die and nettles.. cars zooming past within inches.. all the time pushing my bike and trying to elevate the front wheel... it took me hours!

I got back to civilisation, looking over to the old abandoned hospital.. the roof caught fire yesterday so we had fire engines zooming past all night.

I hope you got some beer!!

I've been out for a few short rides lately, but most of my spare time has been spent getting my shed up and running. With that now pretty much done, and a breezy, but sunny Sunday evening, I jumped on my Hobbs and took it out. I've recently replaced the rear cog for something a couple of teeth larger (getting old!) and the ride started off well, but after a couple of miles. it seems I still have some adjustments to do. So nursed the bike back home . No photos...

My need to getting out for a ride was not really satisfied, so I jumped on this (which has been packed away safely for almost 6 months whilst I sorted sheds and things) I have missed riding this bike!!

Is the Pace f**ked 🥹😔 hope you're ok to mate 😁

@Betsy - an epic. Hope not too much damage.

Stuffing grass and weed in the tyre when you have no tube to get you home works. Even tying a knot in the puncture place on the innertube can be good enough but it sounds like that wouldn't have worked. Obviously I mean the kind of grass and weed available at the trailside / road side.

Great pics and and as always a great read from you. 👍

I'm fine.. the frame Isn't too bad.. i have a similar amount of scrapes on my knee.. i kept waking up in the night and managed to convince myself the frame was much worse than it actually is.. 😁 #nightterrors

.. in the cold light of day, it's mainly the rear stay.. here, here and here..

fullsizeoutput_4914.webp

I was just going way too fast and the terrain was really loose and powdery because it hasnt rained for so long..

Heading down the trail which circumvents the Burbage valley towards Fox House.. there are rocks to the left, most of the trail is fast / rideable but as it descends towards Fox House.. it gets rocky (i assume the wind and rain have washed the finer particles away) but there are narrow flat sections either side of the stones where folks have walked, rather than walk over stones.. they're only 8-10" wide, you can nail it if you stay on these sections.. but if you go too fast.. your brain can't figure out your route in time for you to react.. o_O

fullsizeoutput_4915.webp

I'd come off the flat section to the left, tried to lift / ride up onto the flat section to the right^ the knobbly shoulders on the tyre lost traction on the incline and threw me over the edge to the right.. maily into bracken and heather.. the Pace ended up on the stones.. it's the second time this has happened with these tyres (or maybe my lack of riding skills 😁) rememebr when i came off on the berm of the BMX track a few months ago grazing my elbow.. it was the same scenario..

I've read this before Woz.. i think on the Rene Herse blog.. alas, fat 2.2 tyres, i might need to stuff weed, grass, bracken, heather the remnants of a discarded bouldering mat and maybe half a dead pheasant to get me home..

I'm going to pop down to J.E.James today and get a few spare inner tubes.

Last time i went to James's .. it was in the early days of covid, just before lockdown.. a lot of shops closed but the bike shops were incouraged to stay open because cycling to work was deemed safer then public transport.. i never leave my bike outside James's, i always carry it in, and leave it inside the doorway, it was never an issue before.. i'd already called them to see if they were open, they said yes but i needed to wear a mask..
When i got there i noticed some hand sanitiser with a sign, just inside the doorway, it's narrow, i was carrying my bike.. the manager who was obviously paniked by the covid situation.. shouted "Stop! you can't come in unless you use hand sanitiser" i said no worries, can i just put my bike down first? .. he said.. and i quote "No! hand sanitiser first then put your bike down" wait/what, how? ..😁

Having a fairly good idea where you were, you fkn loon o_O that could have been very nasty.

You need lateral space to keep the bike under you too, especially if you're being knocked around by loose stones, and the faster you're going, the more space you need.

Last time I did this I ended up tumbling down the trail head over heel everyone (else) was laughing but I only damaged my clothes🙄
