Another bike - but what to do?

Most of my riding is through the equivalent of grinding paste. I'm starting to track disc brake pad wear vs vee brake replacement and anecdotally I would say there is a benefit of longer life when the braking surfaces are not being dunked in the goop. Again, anecdotally, I would say hydraulic...

Another bike - but what to do?

Re: More a question of what I should be looking for, rather than a should I be looking really. I cringe when I see the crud...but somehow the Clockwork has shrugged it off for 17 years and just keeps going. Drawing on the bank of knowledge, the forum may well say "1997 XYZ brand was the...

Another bike - but what to do?

I'm wondering if a second mountain bike isn't a bad idea...here's my thoughts:- I own a 1997 Clockwork. I only bought a Clockwork because I couldn't afford a Vitamin T. I want (but don't need) a titanium frame, just because I can afford one now. I ride off-road a lot. Whatever I buy will have...

1" steerer - anyone make new parts?

5 mins after posting...I may have found a resolution; 1" to 1 1/8" shim. This opens up the choice of stems - anyone used one?

1" steerer - anyone make new parts?

So after my experiences of ageing aluminium failing with less than idea outcome I thought it might be prudent to replace the stem on my 1997 Clockwork. Background; This bike is ridden as the designer intended on a weekly basis. This year its covered 2500kms offroad and should see 3k before...

    A note of caution...

    A note of caution...

Re: Ha ha ha...no! But it's not unreasonable to consider it a possible cause.

    A note of caution...

Re: Quite. After years of promising myself I would fit some suspension front forks I finally got round to fitting some almost brand new 97 period Marzocchi Bomber forks. This was in late 2012 and around 9 months before the handlebars snapped. Did they change where I rode? No, not really -...

    A note of caution...

Re: The collarbone will never heal. It's trashed. That's the bad news. The good news is we don't really need them. Collarbones are, as I have discovered, optional. 6 weeks after the crash I was back in the saddle. 6 weeks after that I found out you can't break a broken collarbone twice...

    A note of caution...

Re: The Hot Rod snapped just inboard of the right hand shifter clamp. No internal corrosion and no sign of a crack/scratch. Perhaps only non-destructive testing may have revealed the flaw? Who knows?

    A note of caution...

I don't post here much, but thought I would share my experiences with my Orange C16r, or more specifically the Hot Rod handlebars. For sentimental reasons I hung on (literally!) to the original Orange Hot Rod handlebars. Bought new with my first Orange Clockwork in 1992 and used extensively...

    Orange C16R bottom bracket replacement

Many thanks to all who replied. Much appreciated. Replacement chainring now on order. No need to replace the STX cranks after all. There is a very handy chart for figuring out the bolt circle diameter (BDC) of an existing ring here:- http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/bolt-circle- ... lbcdchart/

    Orange C16R bottom bracket replacement

I'm new here, so apologies if this one has been answered before. I have a 1997 vintage Orange C16R. Its fitted with a period STX chainset, but the top ring has pretty much had its day - the teeth are almost ground down to nothing thanks to the sandy grinding paste I spend most of my time...
