Could be just his overshoes covering his pedals/toe clips.

Remember seeing a young LVI ride in 1970 in the Nottingham Elite Criterium against the British pros. It was a bit of a scoop at the time for the organiser (dad) to get Barry Hoban to bring his trade team over for the race. Van Impe absolutely demolished the field! (Barry was third)

    Long cranks.

Could always do a Pogacar and drop down to 165mm cranks. https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/a-55-carbon-chainring-and-165mm-cranks-tadej-pogacars-2024-marginal-gains/

    Todays Race

After the big crash at Itzulia that took out Roglic, Vinegaard, Evenepoel, Kras, and Vine yesterday, and Landa crashing on today’s stage, there’s not many elite riders left uninjured. What a start to the season!

I couldn’t say for definite. Aslin is actually quite a common name in parts of Nottingham. Sadly, John died relatively early at 59 years of age in 1999. I was for a while in contact with his sister but haven’t been in touch for a few years.

Looks like John Aslin. Decent pro. His dad was a good mate of my dad, and John was dating my sister’s mate around that time.

Quite likely making the official film of the race to distribute to the media, long before technology allowed them make the tech small enough to do it from the back of a motorcycle.

Andy Bone Paragon - What would you do?

From memory, my dad’s Paragon had a Williams cottered crankset, but his will have been earlier than 1950s as he had it before he got his RRA in 1948. Very nice bikes. And I was also one for window gazing at Andy Bone’s shop window!

    Anyone know about Hawk bikes?

What used to be Graham Read in Nottingham was bought by Cycle King, and sell bikes branded as Hawk. From what I’ve seen, they’re mostly cheap and cheerful Far East gas pipe stuff.

I didn’t miss too many as i was under orders to hang around just before the start line and pass out my dad’s cards to riders waiting for their start time. And as there was usually a full start sheet on the O2, that meant staying there for two hours - a lifetime for a young lad! 😁

As I was told at the funeral of an old Sherwood CC club mate a couple of years ago, that helped to pay for my schooling!

Brings back memories of Henry trying his best to teach me how to build wheels. He definitely had more patience than I had skill.

Blimey, there’s some names from the past! David and Phil Orme on their tandem (David died a few months ago), and Ray Walton (now club captain at a local golf club). I must have missed that race for some reason. Anyway, I know Henry was definitely not building frames in the early 1970s, when I...
