    Best of British (Components)

Henry’s old shop. I worked there as a lad in the early 70s to earn a bit of money for TT entry fees. Henry also fixed my Langsett after it had a coming together with a parked car during an evening TT.

    Drilled hole in steerer tube

Thought at first that it might have been a grease nipple. That shows how old I’m getting!

Raleigh Road Ace Frame and forks

Pity they messed up the cable routing for the back brake on the 1984 model, going by that image.

    Frame bags.

The old cyclo-cross method of using a quarter of an old tyre outer, taped to the frame, was a cheap way of doing it.

Any interest in sprint wheels for tubs?

    a new Sport is born

In a similar vein, there are plenty of photos that were taken by my dad or Bernard Thompson (and others no longer with us) that people have put on the web or Facebook. Strictly speaking, those pictures are still in copyright until 70 years after death but it would be almost impossible to enforce.

The shape of things to come....

Few years back I went to a main Kawasaki dealer to get some parts for the GPZ500 I had at the time. Stood at the parts counter in my (admittedly well-worn from year-round commuting) bike gear waiting for ten minutes while being studiously ignored by all three of the staff who were too busy...

Who rode a gas-pipe bike in the 70s?

Can’t remember the brand of my first bike, which I got aged 11. Only standout was that it had a Benelux derailleur, which somehow malfunctioned leaving me with bottom gear only. Despite coming from a family steeped in cycling, nobody knew how to fix it! Fortunately, a growth spurt saw me...
