If ever a Klein was in need of a refurb...!

Thanks for all the compliments, really looking forward to completing this now! I just hope I don't mess the remaining stages up as I'm in unknown territory from here on in with the sponges and varnish. Hopefully the effect of the varnish will be twofold - to help smooth off the texture of the...

If ever a Klein was in need of a refurb...!

Here's a close-up of the brush work... I actually didn't expect the finish to turn out quite this smooth, particularly around the weld areas! If memory serves, this is 10 coats of paint: 3 primer, 2 undercoat, 1 half undercoat / half topcoat and 4 topcoat. Still to come: 3 layers of sponged...

If ever a Klein was in need of a refurb...!

Perhaps unsurprisingly this is taking me way longer than planned but work's calmed down a bit and I've finally got the base layer topcoat finished. I've also added and Exotic aluminium fork which will get Pace RC31 V-brake bosses fitted. Next stage will be to add the sponged elements - will try...

If ever a Klein was in need of a refurb...!

4 layers of primer and 3 layers of undercoat completed. Very happy with how it's going so far as there are only the very faintest brush marks visible. Was a bit worried how the finish would turn out around the more intricate welded areas but it seems surprisingly good! Will be giving it a light...

If ever a Klein was in need of a refurb...!

Here it is in its built up state... It's was recently replaced as my cycling-to-the-shops bike by a similarly uglified sub 20lb Scott Scale Premium with Pace RC31s as I wanted something silly light!

If ever a Klein was in need of a refurb...!

Very interesting that you mention hand painted lettering... I think I might have a stab at that actually seeing as the Klein logo is pretty chunky. I remember seeing a Salsa logo that had been handpainted on here once. Here are a couple of examples of my painted sign writing work. Much of it was...

If ever a Klein was in need of a refurb...!

The old paint came off pretty easily. Unsurprising perhaps as it was just slapped on with no primer. Some of the original black paint remains around the welds but this probably just serves to smooth these areas off even more so no bad thing. Of course much huffing and puffing was endured...

If ever a Klein was in need of a refurb...!

Thanks! For a while I was probably the only person in the country to be cycling to the supermarket on a pre-Trek Klein. A hideous paint job is a more effective theft deterrent than a massive lock when leaving your bike outside the shops!

If ever a Klein was in need of a refurb...!

Here are a couple of good ones... I'm going to be brush painting this frame as I would a boat. That might sound strange but I noticed when painting cylindrical items on the boats such as handrails and tiller arms, the finish turns out incredibly smooth. It's to do with the fact that the internal...

Wanted Pace RC31 V-Brake Kit / clamp on bosses

Would love it if there was a pair of these floating around. I know you have been able to get these direct from Pace in the past but they have none on offer at the moment!

If ever a Klein was in need of a refurb...!

This will hopefully be an interesting project. Having owned this Pinnacle for 33 years, it's gone from its original gloss black, to a raw aluminium incarnation, to a rat bike as you see here. The idea is to do a high quality paint job using marine / heritage enamel paints. I am a canal boat...
