Lhatch4's 1991 Bridgestone MB-5
This bike is a pristine surviver. I'm the second owner. I looks like the first owner road it a few times before putting it in a garage and forgetting about it. Exage groupset, steel frame, great bike...
The shifters and leavers are very cheap plastic parts with stamped steel hardware inside. This groupset is basically brand new for being 34 years old, but this bike was made to hit a price point. This was my first time working on parts like these.
I didn't originally intend to make a build thread for this one. It's more of a refreshing of a garage find, time capsule. This was the listing where I found it.
Ignore all of that. 26 was standard for MTB until around 2003. Then the 29er came out 29=700c. A while later 27.5 came out. 27.5=650b. That's all anyone really needs to know about MTB wheel sizes.
This is my old titanium bike that I changed to 650b. The frame can fit 26x2.5 tires. When switching to 650b I had to go down to a 2.1 width tire and low profile lugs. It has just enough clearance on the RS SID fork to work. The increase in bottom bracket height was minimal with my setup. I...
There are several considerations. The frame needs lots of clearance. You will need go down in tire width, even if there is lots of tire clearance. It's obviously easier to make the conversion if you're using disc brakes. Rim brakes do exist that will accommodate larger rims but you will need to...
So I just found this 24 x 26 sm600 with a shimano deore drive and suntour roller cam brakes, that is in better condition. I might try to get this one instead. From what I can see, I think the white one is an 87 sm800 26 x 26 with a Suntour XC 9000 groupset (precursor to XC Pro). What are the...
Pedal clearance makes sense. It's an unusual design for sure. Aluminum at that time is rare. The BMX influence is obvious. They were just figuring things out at the time.
This is why I'm on this website all the time. Thanks for the info. If it's still available when I get home from my vacation in a few days, I'll get it. Thanks!
