That paint has come up great. It looks like quite a "soft" ride and I'd imagine it would be great rolling on what is now known as - ahem - "gravel riding".
How is the Velox shifting doing? Put one on a Lenton Sports when I changed the wheelset out to run a derailleur rather than SA hub and...
Grubbs are great frames for Holdsworth "budget" models!
Mine is a Veloce (path) from 1967, also in original paint finish and it rides brilliantly. Comfortable but responds when you put pressure on the pedals. Probably one of the frames I'll keep when I have to reduce my collection (eeeek).
Yes, after some Googling, definitely Capella lugs. Not much on Velobase about them ("produced 60's") and like you say, restricted to Carltons of the era but appearing later on some Raleigh SBDU frames. Only after 1981 would they have been available to other builders after products from the...
Thanks, yes, it does look "sharp" but handles really well and isn't twitchy at all. The only downside, as I mentioned, is the toe overlap which can really put the brakes on. Only annoying matter is the lack of braze-ons: there's nothing apart from cable guides/stops for derailleur cables.
It was...
Ha, thanks. Yep, the Venom is very nineties and the trick is not to look down too much when riding :) If it needs refinishing in my lifetime (unlikely) I'll just go with a metallic purple which should look ok with the fork!
You're right about the Walvale, thinking about it. Confused myself...
Hey Folks
Trying to get organised in shed/garage to create more space, and as I've not posted on this forum thought a few snaps might be of interest.
Venom: Actually a Mike Kowal build, very neat work and feels quick but it hammers you after a few hours. 531/Columbus? Yes, a right mix of...
Fitted 700c sprints to show it doesn't look ridiculous running 700's instead of 27".
The brake blocks on the calipers have not been moved and are set when the frame was running 27" x 11/4": there is plenty of room on the caliper to drop the distance required to run 700's, should any buyer want...
Claud Butler Ladydale (mixte) road touring frame built in Reynolds 531ST throughout, Campag dropouts, size 21.5 inches (medium). Believe it's an '83 model in original paint finish. This makes it a factory Holdsworth, which always seem to ride pretty well. There are paint chips commensurate...
Re:
Superb looking machine. That fork rake is just so right!
I've a 1980 Mistral frameset which just rides so well it's hard to believe it was built as a "tourer". That's running on campy large flange and Mavic Module E's so maybe cheating a little :D They knew what they were doing with...
Looks great and the Stronglight single, IMHO, really suits it. Reminds me of the style of build I used to see parked outside club stop cafes in the 70's when I was riding about on a Dawes Chevron! Just needs a weathered Carradice saddlebag to finish it off ;)
After all those years I've built...
