    Build complete: 20yo Cannondale SM600 Retro-Grouch build

You're right! I had to experiment with a few QRs til I found one wide enough to sit across the slot. It's a rubbish design, sadly. I'm thinking about taking a round file to the dropouts, to give them a slight forward 'dimple' for the axle to sit in. I'm also after a pair of Cannondale Coda QRs...

    Build complete: 20yo Cannondale SM600 Retro-Grouch build

It was intended as a train-station bike, but it got a bit out of hand! Then again I didn't notice the gearing on the short ride this morning. It's not going up Glentress - 32x16 for that! I'm riding it 20 miles on roads tomorrow, we'll see how the hills are... Cheers, al.

Acht, I knew someone would spot that! Seat was slightly loose on this first ride & slipped. Fixed when I got home. al.

Knobby: If you follow the link to the other thread, it was a comment from Sheldon Brown that did it. He states that headset races are made of hardened steel as are dies, so if you cut slots with a tungsten-carbide blade you can use it as a die. I realised I had a tile saw that fit the bill, so I...

Hi, following on from the chat over here: Cannondale M500 and Pepperoni Q - the bike's finished. (I also posted this on STW so apologies if you're on there too). I'm delighted with how this has turned out. Frame and fork off ebay lay in the shed for a few years until I got round to it a...

Cannondale M500 (I think) and Pepperoni headset Q

Hi, well some time later I finally built the bike up. I opted for adding thread to the steerer and did some research around that. A comment from the late great Sheldon Brown from about 30 years ago (1983) suggested: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tooltips/taps.html Park want £250 for the...

Thanks, it's worth a try though eh? I'll bodge up a headset I took off a child's bike I found in a skip (!) before I go changing the apparently original fork. I think the steerer is steel after a quick "stanley blade test" (it doesn't score). Given that it has a clear serial number, I'd...

Thanks for the pics Charles. I'll assume the steerer's steel... Bodge City here I come  al.

Thanks, so "bodge it" then! OK, I will. It's a 1" headset. I found a 1" hanger clamp for £5.99 and I think I'll just ream out the thread from the top race I've got. That should do it. Cheers, al.

Cannondale M500 (I think) and Pepperoni headset Q

Here's the pictures! Hi, thanks for your replies. I think it is the correct steerer and I need a different headset. Seems like the h/s I need is a bit of a 'missing link' in the evolution from threaded to Aheadset - see the bottom picture of a bike I saw recently. Looks like the top race is...

Cannondale M500 (I think) and Pepperoni headset Q

Hi, I hope you can help. I bought a c'dale frame and fork separately on fleabay a while back and I'd like to get them built up. However the headtube is just plain weird! I'd like to find a headset to get this fixed. (I have pictures but as this is my first post on here I'm not allowed! )...
