In fact, the saving on shoes for a couple of years could buy an Hybrid velo.
Indeed they could. I buy almost all my clothes used. Boots and shoes are much harder to find on the used market but I have been relatively successful that way but could be more successful still. Don't get me wrong, I may be poor but not cheap. I was going to buy a Surly Straggler for 8 bills last week but I was the second inquirer. And, the rest is history. If purchased, the hybrid saga search would be over and we could put it to bed. But....

I dunno bout that. Around here, tall bikes almost always get snapped up fast. For example, just a few hours ago this one went up for c$65:

He already has a buyer for it. Within 3 hours.
What happens to bike sales in Canada when the winter weather closes in? Does the used bike market carry on at the same volume or do people leave it till spring and there's a glut of bikes for sale then?

Hard to know about all of Canada or whether tall riders cease to search for bikes to buy in the winter months. Being a winter country, there is certainly some taper off in bike sales when the snow comes. But, marketplaces like Craigslist in any of the major Canadian cities always have significant listings for bikes any time of year.

I lived in Quebec City over a winter 15 years ago. People going jogging, walking dogs and living their best lives...and it was -30. Nobody was riding on the road once the snow came from what I saw. I was told if I wanted to ride it was parks and trails - and even then only the trails close to habitation. Most people seemed to hit the turbo trainer over the winter months.
