Cheers I hadn't considered that. Mine doesn't pull to the bar but it pulls further before the pads hit the rotor and doesnt feel as firm as the front. My front brake has a earlier bite point and I'd like them both to match but its non adjustable on M985 levers, only reach. There doesn't seem to be any signs of leaks anywhere at the lever or caliper either so Ive no idea really what the problem is 🤷‍♂️
Worn master cylinder seals will not show external leaks. The hydraulic fluid will simply flow around them inside the lever.

What bleeding procedure are you using?

Did you at any point replace the brake fluid entirely?

Ok good to know. Tried all the well known shimano bleed methods. All fluid is fresh and clean.

To be sure: while being stationary, did you pull the brake lever hard and kept applying that high pressure for a prolonged period i.e. 10 secondsor more?

Spongy lever feel may also come from a misaligned caliper.

If the fluid is fresh, the alignment perfect and the seals in good condition it might just be down to the longer hose which is effectively less stiff than the shorter front brake hose.
There should be some sort of designation visible on those hoses. What do they say?

I did. It seems to firm up a bit after a prolonged squeeze.

Its BH90. Could be the original hose that came from the factory when the brake was made circa 2012 meaning its pretty old. I wonder if it may have degraded over time?

I'll double check the caliper alignment 👍

That is the correct hose type for this brake.
👍
If you really want to keep those brakes it still might be worth to take apart the lever assemblies. Not to change the seals but to clean everything thoroughly and apply fresh lubricants.

Concerning caliper alignment you should check whether the pads and disc are parallel not only from the top but front-to-back as well. This way you can check whether the brake adapter is orientated correctly. Some mating surfaces could be compromised after the repaint.
