Campagnolo Cuestions ;)

Evening all
Have acquired a Valentino r/m (which was only made for a bit around 1977 and not greatly admired?) and a ‘matchbox’ f/m which is more of a mystery but rather lovely. Also have the d/t levers which have a big facing nut (with milled edges, like a coin and annoyingly slightly damaged but possibly repairable) that’s possibly all part of the same era… but can anyone tell? Will grab a picture later. And it all needs a good clean but the dirt and grease appears to have preserved things quite well.

Sounds like you may have a complete Valentino Extra set. Not as posh as Record, of course, but it'll look the part (and work) on the right bike.

Those shifters with the big friction adjusters were around from 1974, according to Velobase.

I was surprised that the matchbox style FD apparently was around until the mid-80s (although, being Campagnolo I shouldn't really have been surprised). Both the RD and FD look so out of date compared to the Japanese parts of this era, though of course they were the cheapest end of their range at that point.

Those parts certainly would make perfect sense together on a bike, anyway - anything from the mid-70s to early-80s, I'd say.

Ah, thanks all!
The r/d is the one with the oddly triangular cage, will organise some pictures before I start to clean them up :)

I could never quite get onboard with the looks of that design (same as Valentino Extra, except weird cage plate?); but I liked the shifter design over what I use (earlier w/slot headed bolts) regarding looks and ease of adjustment. The "UFO" style (c.'70/'71 to ?; used in Valentino, Velox & NGS) is, in my opinion, the best looking set-up even over Record D-ring design.

I use a stock Valentino Extra (f/r mechs & shifters) regularly without issue on a ~'71 Crescent.
