Stars Stripes Kilauea

I wonder if that's what led to the sale.

If it were my project I'd never be able to live with those errors. We must be talking about £300+ for a paintjob like that, with the fade and all the masking involved, even if that didn't include bb shell threads :)

I was quoted £400-500 for my Hot to painted either in this scheme or Rasta.

Kinda why I dragged the decision out for so long as I worried details would be wrong which would annoy me. Luckily managed to get a Hot in the correct colour in the end.

I do like your Kilauea though and for what it cost I don’t think it would bother me

I agree, considering what I paid I'm not going to lose sleep over it. The chip is more annoying than the stickers, but even that isn't the end of the world.

@sam_white can correct me if I am wrong on the month, but I would say that was made March 1998 in the Hodaka factory - the C is the month.
I've read that the letters refer to a two week period within the year (52 weeks, 26 letters) so C would refer to being built in the 5th or 6th week (early to mid Feb) of '98. I've seen several frames where the letter involved is later in the alphabet than L so I don't think it can represent the month.

Yep, this. Jogged my memory on a conversation I had with Pip 🙏

If it helps you a bit more to figure out what the frame is, I've been able to put my '98 Kilauea next to a '98 Caldera (the next frame down, same tubing as the Cinder Cone and Lava Dome I think). At first sight I couldn't see any differences, all the fixtures and fittings are identical. But the downtube definitely looks bigger. So, on my (admittedly cheap) gauge, the Caldera was 32.2mm and the Kilauea 35.5. Different size frames (19" for the Kilauea and 18" for the Caldera) but I doubt that would make a difference to the tube diameters.

From my discussions with Sam, it seems much more convincing that the letters were months, but there are letters which were skipped. that certainly matches with the Hodaka GT serials I have.

My downtube measures 33.8 on a very cheap non-digital gauge. As previously mentioned paint is pretty thick, so could be 32.2mm 🤔

Would you mind weighing the Caldera frame with the headset cups removed? I'll do the same.

Here are all the parts for the Chris King headset, the seller believes the top race isn't CK.

I'm not a Chris king expert, can anyone tell me if this seems legit? And apart from a top cap, what would I need to get to complete it?
