Just wondering whether there are major differences in quality and function between these sets of 9 speed shifters?
I expect the M95x to be much better - how about these two?

In my opinion there's very little difference in performance between the LX, xt and xtr. I veer towards xtr having become a bike snob over the years but that said, I've had LX on bikes and it worked just fine. Xt too. My latest build, while modern, I've gone for xt, seems to work and feel just as good as the xtr, just marginally heavier I think.

The LX takes me back to my first retro build, my GT rts-2. I owned it from new but it was mothballed for years while at uni, and when I pulled it out, V brakes and 9 speed had come along. I upgraded it from LX 8sp and cantis to 9 speed LX with v brakes. Worked a treat and looked good too.

I've since had many m95x 9sp builds, my fave retro groupset by far (although very partial to m970), and while I can say I've got top of the line kit, in reality the LX does the same job and is almost the same colour too. If I wasn't such a bike snob, LX would befit builds as would the XT if the era, though the mechs are marmite in terms of looks for some.

In all honesty, do you prefer blue, silver or grey (well bluey grey)? There isn't much in it so pick the best colour for your build.

Thank you Ian
That clears things up !
I quite like the LX - but having evolved into a bike snob too I have dismissed LX M570 for a long time. Instead focussing on (and I really like the M970 shifters) XTR and above or when push came to shove XT (though I’m not keen on the finish of the M750)

I think with the LX being so so cheap to buy and relatively discreet (compared to M750) I
Think I’ll take a punt!
I was in a quandary - needed 9 speed shifters to go with a 9 speed mech and cassette - I had decided on Da bacon's with Paul thimbles but the Paul’s would cost too much new and 2nd hand are from abroad so with shipping and time … and I am in a rush to finish the job so don’t want to wait - usually I go for as discreet a shifter as possible such as the XT M008 on a retro build but that’s 8 speed - I’d prefer a 9 - So I think I’m going to go for the LX for now and see!
Thanks

Thanks mate
You were spot on and helped me with that post
I opted for the duo tone LX M570 and couldn’t be happier - the quality is very good - nicely built - can’t believe I’ve overlooked these out of snobbery - and definitely look nicer than the M750

I bet the innards are identical!
Wouldn’t surprise me!
These are mostly metal - the barrel screw thing I think is plastic though sturdy - I guess the M750 and M95x are Metal?

All three shifters pairs weigh around the same 250 grams +/- 2-3 grams. All boils down to the color you want. I mean, from a manufacturing standpoint, just about all aspects of the alloys used are identical across the range. There is a very slightly smaller finger pad area on the XTR's.

Sorry never owned any. As Shimano have gone from polished finishes and metal in M737/9 to painted and plastic in M750, my bet is that it's the same nylon inside.

I've given up on them as 9s was too tetchy for me - I'm back to 7s Shimano or 9s SRAM. In both cases the longer cable pull makes it fit and forget.
