Buying a whole bike to get one part

May I provisionally consider myself a bone-picker for the frame?! I think I might have been the person who outed it when it came up on Ebay....just such a neat looking thing. I could probably get DHL to collect thru work if you didn't mind packing it?

Can't decide if I'm really good or bad at stripping and flipping a complete bike for one part.

Often the more expensive bikes, I end up selling the lot eventually. However the 15 Euro specials have got me the front mech or
five chain ring bolts I wanted with various other smatterings of gold dust to upgrade the fleet of errand bikes for free and still
sell the rest to re-coup the time and drink expenditure in the man-cave.

I reckon 110 Euro is the most I paid for a single part from a complete bike - a Sunn with a lonely Crossmax bladed spoke rear wheel that I had spent 3 years looking for.

EDIT: Found a picture of the original advert. There was also a XTR rear V-brake on it too. A right bitza with a GS chainset and Altus rear mech.

Bought a whole bike for a set of spins. Badly listed, noticed the wheels and dropped round on way home from work as it was pretty local. Bike was mint, spins as new and straight with buttery smooth bearings.

Sold and karma'd the rest (spesh fsr).

Bought a mint 1990 Lava Dome for the mint original tyres, to go on my 1990 Kona Titanium. Done it a few times I think

To those expressing an interest in the frame or parts - I'll assess the bike once it arrives, some things I will be keeping (fork, wheels. grips, some bits I will sell (stem, seat and post, bars, drivetrain bits, levers) and the frame will be karma'd, but I'll do that with full list and pics in another thread in the correct forum.
👍

I recently paid £30 for a whole bike just to nick the amberwall tyres from it.

Karma got me back though, because when I deflated the tyres to remove them they cracked and crumbled before my eyes.
I decided thet weren't safe to use after all

Leaving me with a worthless BSO with no tyres...

Pointless... 🙄
But I got a totally awesome Townsend out of it, wait until you see what I've done to it!

That small Offroad cro-mo frame is actually a very nice-riding frame....and with a flex stem quite a nice Historical Thing.

My latest incident - saw a Flow 4130 jump bike frame but presented as a complete bike - colour = iron oxide. Frame: rusted. Wheels: rusted. Every component: rusted. Saddle: holed and rusted. Chain: rusted and solid. Grips: crumbly. Tyres: papery. Well, for 49:00 seemed worth a punt, and only 60 mins away. Thought frame was only save-able item.

Got it home and started spannering, releasing a multitude of spiders. Seatpost..not seized! Stem...not seized! In fact, with copious amounts of MucOff and GT85 everything turned from oxide to shiny. Bearings just needed flushing. Used it in the pumptrack last weekend and basically a Jolly Nice Thing.

Well, I guess it wasn’t worthless after all 👍🏻 Is there a build thread??
Actually I still have the handle bar grips from it, so it wasn’t totally pointless on my part.
Still, it was a lot of work for some second hand foam handlebar grips 😂

Have done it the other way round, buying a whole bike but not wanting the actual frame, just all the parts. Did feel guilty for a few minutes 😑

I haven't done a build thread as it is going to be an E commuter!? Sorry, but I will put some pics up, I'm cracking on with it tonight hopefully?
