Looking to refresh a 1992 Orange Prestige, not at all interested in keeping her 'period correct', looking to give this old classic a completely new lease of life, giving her a new paint job and a complete overhaul using where possible newer (or at least superior) parts and componentry. In other words I don't want the bike to be a concourse tier museum piece, rather a bike fit for throwing down trails in 2021.

The bike is currently in the mail, so I can't post any pics or give specifics about its current set up, of course I'll provide all that just as soon as I can.

Been lurking here for a while so I know a lot of you lads have bags of experience with these bikes, I'm hoping you can help me to make the best choices, I'm particularly interested in finding the following parts. with a focus on quality and lighter would be better, although I will go for those parts that have a proven track record when it comes to reliability and durability.

*Bottom bracket
*Headset
*1 x 10/11/12 group set and crank

Thanks in advance, this is a great site and I'm looking forward to learning from you.

Just see what modern HTII Shimano Deore / STX groupset you can buy (or higher)
BB comes with the cranks, but will need to be 68mm shell width capable.

You'll not really be able to go disc, so grab some XT/LX V-brake M770/780 or whatever the current Txxx or similar number is and the corresponding Brake levers. Theywork really well.

headset depends on your forks.
But it'll be a standard external 1 1/8" headset.
look on CRC and see whatyou can find.

Modernising is much easier to do.

Are there any modern shimano groupsets that I should avoid or that may come with compatibility issues? What range in particular would you recommend I take a look at? My Google Jedi skills are failing me.
Edit - For example would a Shimano XT M8000 1 x 11 groupset be compatible?

Also looking for a decent wheelset with the usual wish list of fairly light, reasonably durable without being insanely expensive.

It is just avoiding groupsets that need a different freehub, or boost bottom brackets and hubs...
The shop seller an modernist may know more.
Even front mechs seem to have about 20 thousand different iterations and mounting styles.

It more about checking the parts are compatible with you frame.

I think that means you need to stick to 11 speed max.*
But you'll find getting parts hard, a look on merlincycles shows you can't seem to get everything in the complete groupset.

*unless you can find a q/r rear 12 speed wheel with 135mm spacing.
@drystonepaul may be abke to give proper input with modern parts usage.

Anyone know if this set would be compatible in 175mm length? My frame is 19''

Hi, no I don't think so. The chainset is boost and the front derailleur is e-type neither of which will work your Orange.

I don't think any groupset is going to make a significant difference to the capabilities of a Prestige for most riders. It'll still be as fit as it was back then. Fitting an older groupset doesn't have to make it a concourse tier museum piece either.
