Barn find, early Klein ID help please...

right, so these two are in the shop at the moment and i am completely unsure what they are...but i'm positive that many here do.

thing-1: i'm thinking early attitude/adroit? SN: BAT8E7 (bottom of dropout). quill MC stem (MC1?), welded klein fork (with it's own SN: 5A92D). xc pro 7s drivetrain, diacompe SS5/986 brakes, ritchy vantage/wtb greaseguard/original smoke wheelset, cooks cranks.

thing-2: same but earlier? 1" steerer. SN: 2TG0B6 (also dropout). original RS1 fork. quill MC stem. xt 7s drivetrain & brakes, wheelset as above (but one ground control tire). bullseye cranks.

nice find, eh? can anyone provide positive ID of model & year?

have not had a chance to thoroughly assess condition, though i had a good look for cracks/dents/etc. other than faded paint, framesets look to be excellent...a few scratches, no corrosion, no dents, no cracks.

no plans for them yet. gut says keep one (thing-1) & sell one (thing-2). this is not a feeler. please no 'i want it'. i'll list whatever it is here first, don't you worry. just looking for background right now...

those paintjobs are amazing, and unique color combos that i know i have not seen! really really nice find.

Top one is a 1991ish Attitude with the original welded crown MC1 fork. Bottom one is a Top Gun! What the Rascal was called before they were forced to change the name.

The Top Gun is the rarer bike, and the one I would keep personally.

Super nice finds, I'm jealous!

so the eval begins...

i started with the attitude (as it is the one that i am most curious about given the scarcity of MC1 parts), and i am pleasantly surprised (thus far) to discover that it seems to be in quite good shape!

headset seals are still supple and uncracked, and seem to have done their job. bearings are a bit stiff (seals?), but are smooth and look excellent. similarly, the press-fit BB is wonderfully smooth. anyone know how the fork comes out (a gentle knock?), so i can inspect the lower bearing?

hit the rear end with a bit of aerosol furniture polish (great one step clean/shine) and the paint woke right up too! can't wait to find a bit more time to complete the task.

finally, any guess as to the age of the cooks cranks? similar to the bike i assume? they are pre-patent, and look a bit clunkier than the CBR / RSR that i am familiar with. has milled groves on the sides of the arms, nearly the whole length.

more to come...

youll jack up the bearings most likely if you remove the fork and or bearings. according to the instructions of the headset tools ordered from trek klein. my lbs got it for me and hooked me up on the low, they were on sale $75usd but took forever to ship

and i was ordering parts for a quantum pro, and they sent me the mtb bearings and spacers instead. i have a lower bearing for those forks i THINK, id probably send it for cost of postage.

but thats from the usa, so it might be a bit.

the top one fit the bottom of the roadbike and you have mc2 so dont need spacers (i have like 20...) or else id offer those too.

im just in a good mood i guess if your wondering wtf.

love the kleins, enjoyed looking at their photographs as the paint is very unique. enjoy! hope they ride as good as they look 8)

Whoa, I've never seen such a paintjob on Klein as the one on the Attitude!
The MC1 combo however looks to be a later addition for it doesn't fit the other paintjob at all.

The paintjob on the Top Gun is called 'Aurora'. Quite rare one too and much better then the usual 'Patriot'.

Nice finds! 8)

Attitude is ALMOST a Storck...

But not quite...

Similar though...

Cheers,
BB.
