It's a very common u-brake as used on most bikes around 1989-90 and every GT bike through until yesterday. Also used on many BMXs. Not rare, not bizarre but a bit shite, like the bike. One to avoid unless you're a glutton for punishment.

:D i wasn't going to bid on the bike but i've never seen a rear brake down there before :o definately never saw them in my bmx days either, unless i've blanked it from my memory due to the shiteness

cheers for clarifying

The shiteness is especially concentrated in this one as its an exage mountain which is plastic coated steel. Either these flexed like shatterproof rulers or snapped like lolly sticks. The problem with the placement of there brakes were that they were pioneered in Marin where the nearest to mud they get is dust mixing with the riders sweat. Transplant that over to the uk and you end up with a mud clogging, chainsuck inducing nightmare of a brake that would wear through the rims in one decent winter ride.

They are used on more modern bmxs rather than the old skool ones.

thanks again, learn something new on here everyday.my best new fact up to now was that muni mula was aluminium backwards,i love that
cheers

loads of bikes had these including Stumpjumpers but as they were made in Taiwan, pete_mcc considers anything like that to be waay beneath him - in fact I'm starting to worry about his mindset.

Bike probably started out as:

yeah had a u brake on an early GT they were propper shite, though thought they were cool at the time as no one i knew had one

Yep, my late 80's Muddy Fox came stock with Dia-comp U-brake. I could never get that to work right, upgraded to an XT U-brake, 100% better, but agreed, Bedfordshire clay and BB U-brake didn't work well. Even purchased one of those plastic mud catchers (pre crud) that covered the hole behind the seat tube.
