1992 Trek 9500, waste of Shimano XTR?

Finally cleaned up the Trek 9500 a bit. When I took it out to ride it, I remembered how poorly they worked. Anyway, they wasted a nice XTR kit on this one but that is how it came. Worst full suspension design ever? More pictures and details @ http://mombat.org/MOMBAT/Bikes/1992_Trek_9500.html

I had one of these briefly (might have been a 9200 though) black & purple & full lx - only had it for a couple of weeks & only took it out once, unfortunately financial issues meant i had to get rid of it before i had chance to fully explore its limitations!

I personally don't see the point in having a high end groupset on it if you've got something else in the shed that would benefit from it instead. then again, if you don't need the xtr for anything else then leave it on there for a giggle!

It's an interesting if unattractive bike, nice to have a photo of it all glammed up though, functionally it's a waste of STX let alone XTR. . . I doubt it'll get ridden much if it's one of many in the stable.

wind the pre-load right up

makes a hell of a difference

i dont think they're that bad

It was of its time, distinct and quirky......perhaps not the best answer to the suspension issue, but that doesn't stop the rest of us enjoying our quirky kit.....ride and enjoy it I say!......I will have it off you if you don't want it!... :D

Trek wanted dealers to take them in as demo bikes when they were new so we bought one at a pretty good discount. Took it out on exactly one ride, went back to the shop, wiped the dirt off and put a price tag on it. Pretty miserable ride. Took this one around the block a couple times to take pictures and it wasn't good. Later ones had some damping but this one is pretty much a catapult!

One of these is still the only full suss bike I have ever ridden. Have things moved on yet? It felt as if it had extreme biopace rings on it.

Since we got this one, we did take the 1992 9000 apart and will be selling the frame. $200 + shipping and it is on the way :D

FirstFlight is MOMBAT the first M being Museum ;)

First Flight, you've listed the colour as Black with Purple swingarm but the Swing arm is not purple, like their other purples, but actually a Blue called 'Lunar'

If it's original the Bottom bracket will be the UN90 (XTR), seat should be a Flite originally and the tyres their 'Z-axis comp folders'
