XT Hubs

Can somebody remind me what series XT hubs did Shimano go all to pot with?
I'm talking about issues with bearings, bent/broken axles, what series number was it M7??

Cheers

Is that the M760 and M765 that I hear the cones tighten themselves up.
I have a pair of both and they work just fine.

I think it was M780 - it is when they went to the oversize aluminium axle and shrank the bearing ball size. They also had a design flaw on some rears which caused the freehub to disintegrate after 300 miles.
The gold label M738 with steel stubs carrying the cones kept the big bearings and are fine.

There are several threads on the Cycling UK / CTC forum about it, try this:

Re:

My m765 hubs are harder to nip up correctly with cone spanners, can't quite put my finger on why but my LX m585 hubs are def easier to get right - could explain the self tightening cones on that era of XT hubs? Also had a freehub replaced under warranty on an xt m785 hub, as mine had cracked very early on.

Re:

760's were good, steel axles, proper sized ball bearings and all that. I have a set so can confirm this.

770 is where they switched to larger aluminium axles and thus smaller ball bearings.

You can clearly see the difference between the steel and aluminium axles if you look at images of both types of hub.
