Strangely enough ive almost got exactly the combo you two are suggesting, just a 46 instead of a 48.
Originally I was thinking of bigger rings combined with 26 inch wheels to match the gearing of Galaxy style touring bikes. Ill do as you suggest and try with just a 48 for now. Cheers for the advice.
