I have just acquired a new project and it wasn’t until i was hanging it up in the garage I noticed this. Anyone else done similar? Im presuming its to help keep the chain on?

Ahh, thought it might be, although never used one. The guy had the bike from new and I think used to do quite a bit of competitive riding in the Malverns. At first I thought is was for rear end stability.

Ringle did one called the anti chainsuck thing. Very similar but equally a bit different.

I’ve got a home made one in my Pace - fitted it back in mid 90’s with no copper slip on the bolts so it’s now a permanent fixture

Is it designed to scrape mud off the chain rings in really sloppy conditions?

Nope, it prevented the chain getting stuck on the chain ring and then jamming up - which resulted in a number of outcomes

You had to stop to release the jammed chain

The chain often took chunks out of the rear stay - especially on Aluminium frames

The resulting jam bends or damages a chain link

Often all if the above- if your unlucky

it was "Crud claw" That sat on the rear and stopped the rear block compacting up with Mud - never had one of those, or ever needed one
