Whats the best way to clean up Aluminium?

definately oxidation under the lacquer. you arte in for the long haul on that one my friend

if you are careful and have a knack with power tools, once you've stripped the laquer and decals, you can polish off the corrosion with a wire brush attatchment on a power drill.

It takes a bit of practice as if you dont do it right you end up melting tiny tracks of the aluminium leaving a very rough finish

I have a soft copper brush, wouldnt that be better than steel?

If you are going to use a wire brush on a drill ,make sure its a brass wire and not a steel wire

Steel is way too harsh and as our resident power tool operator says
you may melt the surface and ruin it
