2.0 was the standard, certainly with Shimano in the turn of the 90's
Once XTR came out in '92 it used the thinner current standard, Shimano then rapidly moved across to it as it's Standard.
Gear cable has varied by 0.1mm or so but you don't notice that much.
You may find Clark's Old packaging pop up on eBay ever now and again.
