Shimano - But what does it all actually mean ? If anything.

Re:

I`s say a lot of is just gibberish that they think sounds ok.I do a lot of fishing and use mainly Shimano gear-Diaflash,Stradic,Technium,Aernos are some names that I have.Their top of the line reel is named after wifebeater-Stella.None of it makes any sense.

Re:

The range names mean nothing whatsoever - but the point is that they mean nothing BAD in all languages.

If you consider that Shimano are global, selling the same stuff into all global markets, they need to find names that do not mean anything negative or offensive in any language. It wouldn't be any good to launch a new groupset only to find that the name they chose meant 'horse shit' or 'anal prolapse' in say, Portugese.

Big global companies spend huge sums of money with branding specialists to come up with unique names that are neutral. Beige, if you will.

Here is how not to do it:

Three little words

BULLSHIT
BAFFLES
BRAINS

Shimano live by this Mantra, Biopace, DynaSys, Positron, just to name a few examples ;)

I had a Shimano Alivio carp rod. It was very very good for the money, until the day it snapped while 'just riding along'.

yeah, but Jap motorbikes used to have cool names like "Gamma, Slingshot, ExUp etc).

ExUp wasn't a motorcycle name. It was the name of Yamaha's power valve system for 4 strokes (Exhaust Ultimate Power Valve).

But everyone called the FZR1000 an Exup, my first jap bike was an Exup;-)
They picked XT cos the designers car was a 351 XT Ford Falcon.

Er... Shimano groupsets . not bottles of cola ,fishing reels or the like :?

I dunno, try to propose a serious thread, something to give us all meaning and .... :p

I doubt it. They named a late 70s series of trailbikes after a late 60s Australian car? What was the TT version named for then?

I think what we're getting at is that Shimano didn't keep the groupset names to just bikes, a lot of fishing stuff has the same groupset names. So the names probably don't have any particular relevance to cycling.
