Re:
Google threw up this thread and I immediately registered to this forum!
I spent most of my youth perched on the back of my Saracen x-ess. Then I got my driving test and got out of mtb for about ten years during which time I gave my bike to my younger brother. He managed to mangle it and hand it back in bits, in which state it has lay in my outhouse for years.
Currently ride xc on a rock-hopper but with an uplift service at a local trail I want to get back into some gravity assisted riding. The rock-hopper has reached the limit where I have to inspect it at the bottom of each run to for a damage report, so I want to pull out my old x-ess and get it built up into something that can take a hammering.
Your thread is a real inspiration as to what potential there is in it.
I'm a bit of an amateur at this and literally came up with this idea on my way into work this morning so I can't even remember what condition the components are in. I know the derailleur got caught in the back wheel so the wheel, derailleur and hanger are all knackered. Also the forks were never serviced in 15 years and I'm more interested in functionality that nostalgia so I want to swap them out - how do I find out what forks fit?
I'd say my to-do list will look like this:
- derailleur hanger
- front and back wheels
- forks
- front brake (rear was updated to hydraulic disk which might be salvageable)
- new gears (might keep the "grip-shift")
- paint the lot
When I figure out what I'm at and gather up a few parts I'll start a build thread, but it will likely just be to ask for help / advice!!
