Saracen project.

But then you can adjust the.straddle hanger to suit on candies, and can go for max feel or max mechanical advantage, as much a 11 times if you're ruthless with its placement. There's more to the efficiency than the length of the arms.

Thanks for the comments.

Just a quick couple of pics, all stripped... I think I might get it blasted. I reckon getting all that decent thick paint off by hand will be a right 'mare! And it should make for a nice even base to start putting new paint on.

Onward....

A degrease and new decals and it would look ace.

Personally, I would leave the paint as is, and put the money towards some lighter forks, like project 2s.

But enjoying watching this progress...

Treat with kurust or similar after taking back to bare metal, then touch it up. That colour should be ok to match with humbrol enamel paint or easier still, nail varnish.

So it turns out after visiting my buddy at his bike shop that not only is the crank set not original, (which I knew) but it is a 9 speed and didn't fit properly, it was sat slightly too far out from the frame so the front mech was stretching to get the chain on to the big ring.

The steering tube had a quill stem adapter on it to fit the later stem that was on it, this can be re-used depending on what sort of stem I go with.

And finally, some flaky bits of rust fell out of the frame when the BB and the forks were taken out... not so good!

Back to my boring droning on about re-spray; has anyone had an old frame dipped and galvanized at a metal refurbishers (non-bike specialists), and is this possible? Are there any issues over warping or anything?

(excuse my naivety and possibly silly questions, its school time for me with this stuff! Like learning about it though  )

If the drivetrain is running ok apart the front shifting problem its probably cheaper to fit a shorter BB ?
Cheers Paul

For sure, it was actually shifting ok, but wasn't ideal. I think the new BB will be a minimum, this project is going to take a little while, (money, children, wife, work etc) so I've plenty of time to fiddle and fine-tune.
The other option was to do away with the front altogether and just have it as an 8 speed, in which case a whole new BB and crank set would be in order...

For anyone that can help....

With the drop-out I've got on this frame, how do you go about installing a SS hub and getting the correct tension on the chain??
